A summer morning, in the South. It is very early, the sun invades the kitchen. The child is already there, his face dazzled by the strong light. Leaning on the bar, grimacing. The raspberry ice cream does not soothe the pain, it flows down his red throat. The aroma, the sugar, distract him a little. He has just been operated on. He is in pain, very much pain.
As an artist, this moment and this light speak to me. A palette of yellows, pinks and ochres. Crimson red lips. The words of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) resonate in me: “Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light”. The child who aches in the dawning day... rage, rage, as a metaphor for the aging man and the suffering endured by human nature.
