Oil on canvas

In this painting, I wanted to highlight a portrait of a bird, a rather strange creature otherwise known as the "Great Potoo" in English. While painting it, it reminded me of Blake Edwards' cult comedy with Peter Seller's - The Party, in particular the parrot episode, with a retro aesthetic and jazzy music evoking a disconcerting world and society. Even the bird seems confused in the film… . This animal lives mainly in the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is a fascinating nocturnal bird, known for its incredible camouflage ability. Its grayish-brown and spotted plumage looks so much like tree bark that it becomes almost invisible when perched motionless on a branch. This medium-sized bird has a hypertrophied head, with eyes as round as saucers, perfectly adapted for night vision. During the day, it remains motionless and well hidden, camouflaging itself in its environment to avoid predators. At nightfall, it becomes active, hunting insects and invertebrates, and it always returns to its branch. This is the case in the painting. Its cry resembles a dark growl that pierces the silence of the forest. This animal mimicry is magnificently served by the technique of oil painting which allows to render with precision the subtle details and the natural textures. The use of pigments from a range of chamois, browns, whites, ivories, blacks, combined with a specific medium, offers an incomparable depth and richness of colors for the feathers, a great freedom to the artist who likes to work in detail. The transparencies obtained by the glazes contrast with the impastos creating effects of light and volume, ideal for representing the nuances of the plumages lost in a forest environment.
I am the Great Potoo.
Black, my eyes are black,
Round like marbles,
Set in silver.
My mouth, scarlet gape;
Fly swatter open to the darkness.
Beauty of painting,
Landscape feathers
Abstract terror of the deep nights
And frames.
